The Enshittification of WhatsApp
WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 with public assurances that user data would stay separate and the app would remain ad-free. In 2016 it began sharing user phone numbers with Facebook, both founders later left over disputes about data use and advertising, and a 2021 privacy policy update triggered a user exodus to rival apps and a record EU transparency fine. In 2025 Meta added a non-removable AI assistant button and announced the platform's first advertising, placed in the Updates tab.
