The Enshittification of TikTok

From 2022 onward, TikTok layered commerce and advertising onto its recommendation feed, launching TikTok Shop in the US in 2023 with shoppable videos and live shopping, and expanding ads into search results. Reporting revealed that employees could manually boost chosen videos into For You feeds through an undisclosed 'heating' practice, and parent company ByteDance confirmed employees had improperly accessed the data of US journalists. The platform shut down its $1 billion Creator Fund, long criticized for low payouts, and US data-security concerns culminated in a divest-or-ban law that briefly took the app offline in January 2025.
