The Enshittification of Discord

Discord built its user base as an ad-free chat platform for gaming communities, monetized through its optional Nitro subscription. Between 2022 and 2024 the company layered on additional revenue mechanisms, including a second subscription tier, a virtual-goods shop opened to all users, and its first advertising product, Sponsored Quests. Forced product changes such as the 2023 username overhaul and mobile redesign drew sustained user backlash. In 2025 and 2026, ahead of a potential IPO, Discord expanded its ad formats with the Orbs reward currency and moved toward mandatory age verification, shortly after a third-party breach exposed government IDs submitted for age checks.

2023-05featuresForced username overhaul removes discriminatorsDiscord required all users to abandon their existing names with four-digit discriminators and adopt unique alphanumeric handles, citing failed friend requests. 2026-02privacyGlobal mandatory age verification announced months after ID breachDiscord said it would lock users it estimated to be under 18, or could not classify, into a teen-appropriate experience worldwide unless they verified their age via facial age estimation or ID upload.
