The Enshittification of Instagram

Instagram replaced its chronological feed with an algorithmic ranking in 2016 over widespread user objection, then progressively reoriented the app toward video, shopping, and recommended content. Internal Meta research disclosed in 2021 showed the platform worsened body-image issues for a substantial share of teen girls, and a 2025 review found most of its announced teen-safety tools ineffective or absent. The company added paid verification in 2023, an EU pay-or-consent ad-free subscription, and tested unskippable ads in 2024, while a 2022 TikTok-style redesign was partially walked back after celebrity-amplified backlash.
